Other Special Elections

The Dade County Democratic Committee has helped establish working partnerships with other Democratic committees across north Georgia. Because of this, we keep track of and assist whenever possible Democrats running in those counties, particularly in special elections.

On August 26th, a special election will be held for State Senate District 21, which lies in eastern Cherokee County, and the very northernmost part of Fulton County. Since Cherokee County is part of the 11th and 7th Congressional Districts, both of which are “north Georgia,” this election is of interest to us.

Special elections to replace vacated seats are often “at-large” or “jungle” primaries. These are primaries where multiple candidates from all parties run together against one another. In this special election, the candidates are:

Lance Calvert (Rep)

Jason Dickerson (Rep)
Stephanie Donagan (Rep)

Brice Futch (Rep)

Debra Shigley (Dem)

Steve West (Rep)

Brian Will (Rep)

With Mrs. Shigley being the sole Democrat running amongst 6 Republicans, the likelihood of her getting to a runoff is strong. This district was 30D-70R in November’s presidential election, but given how special elections are going this year, having it become more like a 45D-55R district is likely. If that happens, with a big push, Mrs. Shigley might win outright on August 26th, but almost certainly will make a runoff against the Republican receiving the most votes.

With a primary and likely runoff ahead of her, Debra is going to need financial support. Her donation page is here. If you want to make phone calls on Debra’s behalf, you can sign up for those here.
